A dog found or a wandering dog reported to the council will be collected by a council ranger. If a dog is not wearing identification, it will be taken to the RSPCA animal shelter at Lonsdale. If a dog is wearing identification, attempts will be made to contact the owner and arrangements made for its return. Callers are encouraged to have the dog tied up or kept somewhere safe so rangers can collect a dog quickly and easily, but only if it is safe to do so. We cannot collect a dog unless someone is at home.  If the dog is aggressive, report its location to our rangers. Business Hours - Found Dogs
Dogs found wandering or sighted wandering during business hours can be reported to council, a Community Inspector will attend to pick up the dog as soon as possible.  If the dog has no identification it will be impounded at the Animal Welfare Northern Shelter, if a dog is wearing a current registration disc every effort will be made to contact the owner for the dogs safe return.  If you find a dog you are encouraged to tie the dog up or contain it in your yard, only if it is safe to do so, an Inspector will attend as soon as possible to pick up the dog.  You will need to be present if we are collecting from your home as we can not collect a dog if no one is home.  If the dog is showing signs of aggression, please do not attempt to contain ot capture the dog, report the dogs location  and an inspector will attend as a matter of urgency.

After Hours - Found Dogs
Council will pick up dogs after hours if the dog is contained or restrained.  We will not pick up dogs wandering after hours due to the difficulty in asscertaining the dogs whereabouts, the dog can sometime be a considerable distance away from where it was last reported by the time an inspector gets to the location

Lost and Found information:  Council has recently made changes to the after-hours service.   Officers contracted to the Corporation of the Town of Walkerville will attend to any after-hours calls.   Officers will attempt to contact owners where the dog is registered with the Corporation of the Town of Walkerville.   However, if contact is not achieved then dogs picked up will be delivered to the Animal Welfare League Kennels at 1-19 Cormack Road, Wingfield.   Owners can be reunited with lost dogs by providing the appropriate identification and paying the required fee to the Animal Welfare League.  All enquiries regarding lost dogs in the first instance should be directed to Council on 8342 7100.   For after-hours enquiries an answering service operates between 5pm and 9am Monday-Friday, weekends and public holidays.  As dogs may also be picked up by inspectors from neighbouring Councils or a member of the public and taken to the Animal Welfare League dog owners may also wish to contact the Animal Welfare League direct on 8268 4188 or 8268 4221 during the opening hours of 10am-4pm seven days a week.

The Council Stray Dog Kennels are located on Watts Street, alongside the RSPCA, and are open between 3.00pm and 4.00pm weekdays (except Public Holidays). If your dog is impounded the following fees need to be paid before your dog can be released:

• $30.00 Seizure fee and $10.00 for every day or part day the dog is in the Kennels.
• $22.00 Destruction fees - (if no-one claims the dog and it is destroyed, the fees will be forwarded onto the registered owner, which includes seizure and daily pound fees)
