K-P.U.P. SPONSORSHIP

What is K - Pup ?

K - Pup or Kevin’s Paws-up Program; a kind of leg-up for some of our longer term residents.

Kevin was an unruly, uncouth and unusually strong Am Staff who had been rehomed time after time only to find himself being returned to the shelter after the briefest of stays with the people who adopted him.  He was one of those dogs that you would have to meet to understand just how out-of-control he was - to give you an idea his nickname was ‘Tassie’ after the Looney Tunes Cartoon Character ‘The Tasmanian Devil’…we are not exaggerating - he was that looney! People were not prepared for this nut bag and we at the shelter feared he would be in the shelter for life.

The shelter was very lucky to have an association with a trainer/behaviourist who we recommended to anyone needing assistance who also offered a board and train facility. It was decided to sent Kevin to ‘boot-camp’ a 10 day board and train facility that would teach this naughty boy some manners - Kevin was naughty but not nasty - while we all tried to find him a fur-ever home.

Kevin passed his training with flying colours; surpassing the expectations of everyone involved; even the trainer. He did so well and made us all so very proud of his achievements. Our Kev is now living large, happy in a home and has a job as he goes to work with his owner every day! It made us think that we would love to give every dog at the shelter the opportunity to get a good eduction.

We named this program after Kevin for a very simple reason; if this boy could be turned around then no dog at the shelter is beyond hope!

We are very proud to offer this 10-day board and train option for any dog with the K - P.U.P. note on the bottom of their description. In partnership with Bob Yeo of Canine Detection Service - a trainer with over 20 years who is a SA Government Accredited Dog Trainer - we are pleased to being giving some of our overlooked residents this chance at getting a ‘Paw-Up’. For $180 you will be adopting a desexed, micro-chipped, vaccinated and professionally trained dog; you will get progress updates throughout this training period and upon collection will spend time and get advice from Bob on how to be the best dog owner you can be.

Paws-Up was devised because a lot of people are hesitant to take on a dog term resident for fear they may have becoming institutionalised by being in the shelter environment for a longer than average period of time. Dogs don’t have such reservations; they live in the moment, but a little extra education never hurt anyone.

Dogs chosen by to be in K - P.U.P. are eligible by private sponsorship - if you feel you would like to help a dog at the shelter by becoming a K - P.U.P. Sponsor; please contact us. We are happy to keep your details private if you prefer or you may choose to lead by example. The choice of which dog you sponsor is totally up to you.

Some conditions do apply to adopting a dog in the K - P.U.P. - you must travel to the shelter and meet the dog and the $150 adoption fee must be paid before the dog enters the program and is non-refundable. You will need to collect the dog you have adopted from the facility in Lewiston where you will also receive instruction from Bob.

We are excited to be offering another option to help some of our long term residents to find their happily fur-ever-after homes and extend our commitment to responsible pet ownership.
